Whether it is called a large village or a small town, Eastriggs was built on the northern coastline of the Solway Firth, a stunningly beautiful area of Dumfries and Galloway. The township of Eastriggs is located on the B721, between the towns of Annan and Gretna near to the Anglo-Scottish Border.
The village was constructed between 1915 and 1918, initially as wooden structures to accommodate the rapidly expanding workforce who would work for the enormous Cordite manufacturing plant, H M Factory Gretna. Soon after its inception, the Eastriggs planners began to lay out the area as a representation of a model village, complete with shops, community buildings and numerous other facilities that the workers could use during their out of work hours.
The renowned early 20th century architects Raymond Unwin and Courtenay Crickmer were given the responsibility of ensuring that Eastriggs was built and ready to accommodate the International workforce, which was expanding day by day as the H M Factory, Gretna workforce expanded, with the Cordite factories development.
Eastriggs street names represent the factory workforce, and the countries, cities, towns and other notable places around the Empire that these people had left, to support Britain’s war production efforts. Examples are shown below and reflect the wide range of nationalities within the 30,000 workers who came to work in the factory. Eastriggs, following its gargantuan involvement in the Great War has subsequently styled itself as the ‘Commonwealth Village.’
The names of the countries from which the employees arrived from are listed below:-
Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, Tasmania, the Falkland Islands and many, many more.
